Representación del feminismo en los personajes de ficción televisiva: Caso Game of Thrones y Vikings

Abstract

Despite their apparent belonging to a modern trend, multiple audiovisual products with a mass audience are carriers of discourses that reproduce the lack of depth and features of women on the screen, showing a perceptible inequality between the feminine and masculine. Therefore, this research analyzes the representation and discourse they present about feminism in the female characters of the globally successful television series Game of thrones and Vikings. For this, the narrative and characters are studied through a sample of chapters and compared with established theoretical gender criteria, using content analysis and discourse analysis. The results provide relevant conclusions about the recurring flaws in female roles in situations of power and the clear reflection of how far the productions are from representing characters in equal acceptance, benefits, opportunities and objectives. The female characters are developed through a series of stereotypes that do not correspond to reality, however being described by the showrunners as "feminists". The results suggest an understanding and deep reflection on the use of these characters as models of behavior and promoters of stereotypes.
